Stages of my voice 2
People who
influence my voice Several people saw my potential long before I did. They might have even
recognized some potential I hadn't noticed I had. My older sister, (my number
one role model) played a key role in the development of my self esteem. Because
of her, I continue strive to be better despite others' opinion of me. Lance, an
A level high school student, once told me I was talented and I should consider
public speaking. He was the leader of the debating team at his high school and
he told me to consider debating. I understood what he was saying but I doubted
myself. I also thought about what others had said about me in the past and the
way they degraded my voice. Lance gave me an opportunity to let my voice to be
heard. He wrote a debate speech for a competition he wanted me to enter. On the
day of the competition I knew I had it in me; I knew it was time to show
everyone my voice was important. I won the debating competition with the speech
Lance wrote and finally someone had found my voice and given it back to me.
Sergeant Heron, a police officer, also helped to influence my voice. He saw me
performed in various plays and heard me sing and speak. He saw greatness in me
and played an integral role in my development. A number of other people
helped to influence the ways in which my voice developed.
Voices I have
imitated
From a very young
age I would imitate radio broadcasters’ voices. I remember listening to politicians
speak and trying to enunciate my words like they did. I would admire people who
were in well off professions to try and be like them or sound like them
whenever I speak. They did eventually help me to be who I am today.
There were voices
that I disliked as well; those were the voices that told me I was never good
enough. I never really liked a voice that did not sound confident. It reminded
me too much of my own voice; the one which I hide from people because of what
they would say.
What I listen for
in a person’s voice is clarity, sophistication, common sense and awareness. I
listen to their ability to express themselves without fear or nervousness.
These are some dynamics that I also try to adopt within my own voice.
Ways in which I
have taken care of my voice
I believe my voice
is a treasure and I always try my very best to take care of it. I have taken
care of my voice by staying away from drugs, smoking and other harmful
substances that could have contributed to my inability to speak or use my voice
profoundly.
Ways in which I had
misuse my voice
I have suffered
vocal misuse a few times and that’s because I didn’t know how to use my voice
in the proper way when singing. Screaming and shouting at entertainment events
is another way I have misused and caused trauma to my voice. Although such
incidents contribute to my vocal misuse, I learned my lesson and try not to let
it happen.
Have I set
unrealistic limitations for my body and my voice?
I discovered my
voice a long time ago. Now the time has come for my voice to be heard. I refuse
to sit aside and allow people to judge my ability to express myself. I have set
unrealistic limitations for my voice
I intend to change
that by continuing to taking care of my body and my voice. I will do this by
abstaining from alcohol and drugs and not allow physical forces hinder my ability
to speak. I always try to work hard at everything I put my mind to. While
no one knows what the future holds, I’m determined to work hard to protect my
voice.
Observations people
have made about my voice
People often tell
me that I should pursue a career in radio broadcasting. This is interesting,
because ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to become a radio
broadcaster. I am always surprised that people can identify what I want to
pursue before I tell them, just by hearing my voice.
I have identified
great projection in my voice and I want to be able to use my voice to the best
of my abilities. Even though I believe I have a great voice and I am ready for
it to be used, there are certain areas I need to work on. I need to work on
clarity and the proper enunciation of words.
The time as come
for my voice to be heard. I will not sit aside or be turned away because of
what others think. I will rise up and speak up. I have faith to know the end is
nothing but a new beginning. What others say is just to stop my dreams from
becoming a reality. Therefore, I will fight for my voice to be heard and leave
behind a legacy that will not diminished.
